The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just the body, but the soul.
— Alfred Austin
President’s Message Time has flown since the Salt Air Gardeners originally met in the fall of 2016. Since then we have won numerous awards from both the Delaware Federation of Garden Clubs and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. Our club is full of doers and our members are active in the community and in their own gardens.
Our accomplishments are celebrated at each of our club meetings. This year we have drawn landscape plans and planted various bushes, shrubs, perennials and annuals for the Bethany – Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce and the Inland River Life Saving Station Museum. We started our “garden with a heart” program at the Brooks Transitional Home, where we helped residents plant their first vegetable garden. We worked with Habitat for Humanity in landscaping two homes in Laurel, DE.
With all this, we still had plenty of time to raise funds for new club ventures. We had three successful fundraisers this year – our first Spring Tea at Cripple Creek Country Club, our first plant sale in Bay Forest, and our continuing SAG clothing/accessories sale. By the end of this summer we will have had our first sunset cruise as well as our first outing at a Delaware vineyard.
Our club is full of remarkable gardeners. We are active and vibrant and just beginning. The journey ahead is so full of promise for the Salt Air Gardeners and I am proud to steer us there.
